Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Optical coherence tomography is a new, non-invasive, non-contact, computer-assisted optical imaging instrument that is capable of producing cross-sectional images of the retina with rapid acquisition time, extremely high resolution and immediate analysis.

 

This new technology has the potential to revolutionize the early detection of conditions through its ability to evaluate the nerve cells. Similar in principle to an ultrasound, the OCT derives its capabilities from an optical time-of-flight measurement, with the difference being it uses light waves instead of sound waves.

 

The OCT contains an interferometer that resolves retinal structures by measuring the echo delay time of light that is reflected and backscattered from different microstructural features in the retina.

 

The OCT can be used to monitor glaucoma by scanning the optic nerve and nerve fiber layer. The OCT is also very useful to diagnosis and monitor many retinal conditions.

 

Obtaining an OCT image is quick and painless for the patient. All of the data and images are stored on the computer and a printed copy is provided to the physician. Acquiring a baseline image and then being able to repeat the test again at either a 6 month or yearly interval is extremely beneficial to monitor any progression of any conditions and in determining treatment options for the patient.
