Oculoplastics

There are many conditions that can affect the eyelids. Some are congenital, some develop with the onset of another medical condition, and others occur with the normal aging process. Unfortunately, as we age, we experience many changes in our bodies and our eyelids are no exception.

Oculoplastics Video

Many of the conditions that affect the eyelids can be improved with surgical procedure. An oculoplastic surgeon specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions. Outpatient procedures like an oculoplastic surgery can be done to correct many of these problems and improve a patientā€™s chances of seeing with their full range of vision.

What is Ptosis?

Ptosis is a condition that affects the upper eyelids. The muscle weakens and the upper eyelids begin to droop to the point where they begin to cover the colored portion of the eye. As a result, some of the normal vision is blocked. This can occur on with one or both eyelids and affects all ages.

What is Dermatochalasis?

Dermatochalasis refers to an excessive amount of skin tissue on the upper eyelid that has lost its elasticity. The tissue comes forward and hangs over the lashes, often times blocking the patientā€™s vision. Depending on the amount and location of the excessive tissue, both central and peripheral vision can be obstructed.

What are Ectropion and Entropion?

When the skin and muscles become relaxed in the lower eyelid, it creates a different problem for the eyelid. The lid loosens and rolls outward, creating a condition called ectropion. With this condition, the lids do not close fully and the eye becomes dry, red, and irritated.

If the muscles loosen and the lids roll inward, the condition is called entropion. This condition can occur on both the upper and lower eyelid. The lashes roll inward and literally scratch the cornea causing damage and irritation.

How will I Know if Something Can be Done to Correct my Eyelid Problem?

Your eye care professional will perform simple tests during your routine examination and will often recommend an evaluation with an oculoplastic specialist. Your appointment with the specialist will involve further testing to confirm diagnosis and treatment.

Surgery of the Eyelids (Cosmetic and Reconstructive)

An oculoplastic surgeon specializes in the reconstruction of the eyelids. Outpatient procedures can be done to correct these conditions and improve chances of seeing with a full range of their sight. Listed below are some of the more common surgical eyelid procedures that are performed at the Center for Advanced Eye Surgery:

Blepharoplasty

  • Upper: the removal of excess skin tissue on the upper eyelid
  • Lower Lid: the removal of fatty tissue from the under eye

Brow Lift

Brow Lift is the tightening of the skin tissue in the forehead area to allow the brow to raise, which in turn allows the upper eyelid to function as normal.

Ectropion Repair

Ectropion Repair is the tightening of the muscle within the eyelid to prevent the lid from rolling outward.

Entropion Repair

Entropion Repair is the tightening of the muscle within the eyelid to prevent the lid from rolling inward.

Ptosis Repair

Ptosis Repair is the tightening of the muscle in the upper eyelid to allow the lid to function without blocking vision.

Levator Resection / Muellerā€™s Muscle Resection

Two of the possible muscles that have allowed ptosis to occur, and through special testing, the surgeon determines which to tighten to correct the condition.
